Imam Madad,

I have put together last year’s 7th Muharram video clips. If someone can send this year’s clips or photos to shiachennai@ymail.com I will try to post them on this blog. Or you can upload clip to YouTube and send the link.

For those who do not know what is Azadari, Matam, Karbala or Muharram. Read it from neutral and most trusted website i.e. Wikipedia. Below are some links which may help…

This video was taken in the 7th Muharram Triplicane Juloos. This is one of those nauhas on which both zanjeer and hand matam takes off well. This is from last year Muharram i.e. December 2009, I will try to post this year’s video soon after saatvi.

Imam Madad, take care.

Triplicane 7th Muharram juloos in its initial stage.

This photo was taken when the savari entered Pycrofts Road and just started to gain momentum. Chennai’s 7th Muharram juloos is very popular and at the time of this juloos, almost no other matami juloos is taken out in entire Chennai.

Zanjeeri matam at Pycrofts Road, Triplicane, Chennai

Now the savari has reached further in Pycrofts road and it is exactly at the popular dress material shop called Choba. In this photo you can see zanjeeri matam.

7th Muharram matam at its peak.

Nice view of 7th Muharram Triplicane juloos. In this photo you can see beautiful aerial view of the juloos.

Haath ka matam in the 7th Muharram juloos.

Another nice aerial view photo taken from a building. Thanks to the owner/people of the building who co-operated so well. Yes, Hindus in Chennai particularly Triplicane have great regards and respect for azadari and matam.

7th Muharram Triplicane juloos towards its end.

This photo was taken in the second half of the savari.

Sabeel next to Chota Naksha

Sabeel next to Chota Naksha. Sabeel is a very old tradition. Sabeel is a place where water and sometimes juices and sharbat is served in the name of Imam Hussain (a.s.). In Karbala, Yazeed and his cruel army ensured that Imam Hussain and his family and companions do not get even a drop of water from 7th Muharram onwards and water was not given till the battle of Karbala ended on 10th Muharram. I will write more about Karbala in some other blog post. The Sabeel’s are run between 1st and 9th of Muharram.

7th Muharram juloos in the streets of Royapettah

Above is the photo of 7th Muharram juloos in the streets of Royapettah, Chennai. 7th Muharram is observed for two main reasons. First is this is the day when Yazeed and his cruel people stopped water to Imam Hussain (a.s.) and his family and companions. And secondly, this day is also observed as martyrdom of Hazrat Qasim (a.s.). Though he was also martyred on 10 Muharram, 7th Muharram is observed as his day of martyrdom.

Very old Alam of Chota Naksha, Royapettah, Chennai

In the above photo you can see the very old Alam of Chota Naksha, Royapettah, Chennai. These Alams are placed on the night before 1st Muharram and taken off on 9th Muharram night in a majlis which is traditionally considered as best majlis of Muharram.
